I wanted to try the challenge of a limited palette and used only five colours: Phthalo Blue (Green Shade), Prussian Blue, White and Raw Umber, and a water based spray paint.

To me, blue is contemplation, peace and dreams as big as the sky above us. It’s for those who adopt our passions as their own, who cheer for us and whose belief in us makes the world so very large and beautiful.

This series of antique and vintage objects - all rendered in loving detail and portrayed in isolation on stained wood - speaks to my great love of bygone eras and treasure hunting. Whether it be in a family home or on a dusty shelf while adventuring around the world, mementoes and souvenirs can tell their stories through the decades.

The Mementoes series depicts a total of 11 objects, in some cases of personal, sentimental or nostalgic significance, painted right down to the light bouncing off enamel or glaze. I have depicted imperfections such as discolouration and chips as these are all part of these objects' stories. Painted with thanks to the family of John Henry Taylor for kindly loaning several treasures.

Finalist - Hornsby Art Prize 2023

This small-scale work reflects the paradox of how the tiniest objects can have the greatest impact. In this still life, each of the books have enlarged my inner life. The creatures are each souvenirs gathered from Paris, Stockholm and Oslo. These tiny things from big adventures make the world feel smaller. The other things may be humble but have outsized personal significance: the lamp, scavenged from the side of a road, illuminates my nightly drawing practice. The begonia cutting in an empty coffee jar refers to a desperate attempt to reinvigorate a get-well gift. The green paint is the same house paint used to refurbish a dollhouse also rescued from the side of the road.
